CHINESE FOOD & A DRINK AT THE COUNTER

Chinese food, another drink.
A night at GOBU, Osaka.

Soy sauce, coarse black pepper and char siu. GOBU turns a plate of bean sprouts into a reason to order another drink. Here is what I ate at this small Chinese restaurant in Noda-Hanshin.

A FIRST VISIT IN NODA-HANSHIN

Low lights. A wok within earshot.

圄武(GOBU)

Some places make a good impression before the food arrives. GOBU did that for me.

GOBU is a small Chinese restaurant in Sagisu, in Osaka’s Fukushima ward, near Hanshin Noda Station. I went in for the first time and liked the atmosphere straight away. It felt a little more grown-up than the casual Chinese places I usually visit. The lighting was low, just how I like it.

The kitchen is right there in front of the counter. The sound of the wok gets the appetite going.

Watching someone work a wok is dangerous when you are hungry. If I tried the same thing at home, half the bean sprouts would end up on the floor.

THE PLATE I WANT YOU TO TRY

These bean sprouts deserve a drink

The plate in the opening photo is stir-fried bean sprouts with char siu, the sliced pork you will also see in the photos below. The seasoning is soy-sauce based, with plenty of coarse black pepper.

It is damn good. The pepper and the pork turn something as ordinary as bean sprouts into a proper dish to drink with. This was exactly the sort of thing I wanted on the counter in front of me.

I did think it was a little expensive for bean sprouts. Then I ate it. Fair enough. I was happy to pay for this plate.

THE REST OF MY ORDER

Fried rice, gyoza, char siu. Keep them coming.

Next came the rest of the food: fried rice, pan-fried gyoza and a separate plate of char siu. Every one of them was good. This is where ordering several things starts to feel like an excellent decision.

Fried rice on the left, char siu in front, and gyoza at the back. A very good line-up.

If you are reading the Japanese menu, チャーハン is fried rice, 餃子 is gyoza, and チャーシュー is char siu. Those are three useful words to bring with you.

And I still had sweet-and-sour pork coming. At this point, I wanted a second stomach.

Sweet-and-sour pork, called subuta (酢豚) in Japanese. Yes, this was good too.

The sweet-and-sour pork lived up to the rest. I had already liked the room; now the food had properly won me over.

CHINESE FOOD NEEDS A GOOD DRINK

I learned this drink’s name from Shenmue

There were Yamazaki and Hibiki bottles on the shelf. Even the whisky looked as though it was living better than I was.

With the food, I also had laojiu, known in Japanese as raochu (老酒). It is an aged Chinese grain wine. If you are curious about the terminology, Takara’s explanation of laojiu and Shaoxing wine is useful.

I first learned the name from the video game Shenmue. Years later, there I was drinking it with Chinese food in Osaka. Finally checking the answer to something a game had taught me. And the answer was: yes, this is good.

WHY I LIKED IT

Come for dinner. Leave room for another plate.

GOBU worked for me because the whole evening fit together: the low lighting, the kitchen in front of me, the Chinese dishes and something good to drink.

If you are looking for somewhere to eat around Noda-Hanshin and fancy Chinese food with a drink, this is a place I liked. My first order would be that char siu and bean-sprout stir-fry. Add the other dishes according to how hungry you are.

Just remember that the second stomach does not come with the meal.
